Alice Walker was a noted bibliographer and literary scholar. She was born on 8th December 1900, in Manchester. In 1912, she attended Blackburn High School for Girls, then from 1919 to 1923 studied at Royal Holloway College, London. Awarded the George Smith Studentship for graduate studies, she obtained her doctorate in 1926 on the Elizabethan author Thomas Lodge.
In October 1926, she was awarded the Jex-Blake scholarship (named after Katharine Jex-Blake, Mistress of Girton College, Cambridge, and pioneer in the field of women in Higher Education). Walker was intending to work on a four volume edition of the works of Lodge; however, in 1927 she received a University of London postgraduate scholarship and went, instead, to study in Spain and Italy.
