Author of five novels, Doric Germain is one of the best-known French-language writers in Ontario, Canada. His first book,
La vengeance de l’orignal[The Revenge of the Moose], published in 1980, is considered a Franco-Ontarian classic, and as such is often required reading in French-language high schools throughout the province.
Germain’s work is intriguing because he writes as a member of a minority linguistic community, since only about 2.2% of Ontarians use French as the primary language at home. Although the list of Franco-Ontarian poets and novelists continues to grow with each passing year, they form as yet a fairly small circle.
