Despite his discreet personality, Gilles Lacombe is a notable French poet and visual artist in Ontario, Canada. He was born in 1946 in Ottawa, the city in which he still lives. Although Canada’s capital is a strong historical and cultural centre of French Canadian identity, Lacombe’s writing does not reflect this identity and cultural context – as opposed to several peers of the same generation. Rather, his growing number of collections of poetry can be read as universal pieces. He obtained a Master’s degree in French literature from the University of Ottawa in 1971, and a Ph.D. in 1991. Gilles Lacombe’s work can be divided into three different periods, although these periods are not marked by dramatic changes but by new inflexions in his writing.
