Rosario Fiallos Oyanguren de Aguilar was born on January 29, 1938 in León, Nicaragua. Her father, Mariano Fiallos Gil (1907-1964), was a famous writer widely considered the founder of the autonomous university system in Nicaragua. Fiallos Gil held various government roles, including a brief stint as Minister of Education for Nicaragua. Aguilar’s mother was Soledad Oyanguren y López de Aréchaga (1902-1995), from a Spanish Basque family that emigrated to Nicaragua in 1921. Aguilar was the middle of 5 children.

Aguilar was creative from a very young age and decided to be a writer at the age of sixteen, according to her interview with Ramos. While her father was in government, she lived in Managua where she attended the religious Colegio La Asunción, like many upper-class young women of
