Abdourahman A. Waberi was born in Djibouti City in 1965 (20 July), to a poor family; his father was a trader and his mother an illiterate housewife. Djibouti, in the Horn of Africa, formerly French Somalialand, was a fuelling station for the French, maintained to ensure access to shipping lanes, and later to keep a French presence in a largely Communist-dominated area. It was the last French colony to be granted independence, in 1977, when Waberi was twelve years old. In 1985 he came to France on a scholarship to study English. Soon he came to the attention of Pierre Astier, and became a literary consultant for his company, Serpent à Plumes, which published many writers from the Third World. Waberi’s first volumes,
