Marie Jones was born on 29 August 1955 in East Belfast and grew up in the city’s Protestant working-class neighbourhoods. Jones began her career in theatre as an actress. At the age of fifteen, after taking part in one of his popular reviews, she wrote to the comedian James Young and asked for the chance to act. Young offered her a role in his 1968-9 production,

Little Boxes

. In 1976, she continued her career as an actress by joining the Young Lyric Players, a group that aimed to bridge the gap between amateur and professional theatre. The Lyric’s commitment to local issues was a decisive influence on Jones and she has maintained strong ties with the company.

Despite her success as an actress, Jones’s experience of the profession incited a frustration with the lack of work for women
