Acclaimed children’s author Lois Lowry has been awarded the Newbery Medal twice, and in 2007 was awarded the American Library Association’s Margaret A. Edwards Award for her contribution to Young Adult literature. To date, she has published forty-three books, all for children and young adults.

Lowry was born in 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her father was in the military, and Lowry grew up on military bases, moving frequently across the United States and as far as Tokyo. Lowry attended Brown University, leaving for college when she was only seventeen years old. However, after two years at Brown, she left to marry fellow-classmate Donald Lowry. Lowry had four children, and later returned to college, earning a B.A. and pursuing graduate work in English literature at the University of
