Sahar Khalifeh is considered to be one of Palestine’s leading novelists and has been described as the Virginia Woolf of Palestinian literature (“Sahar Khalifa”). This comparison is apt, as Khalifeh has an acute eye for exposing the problems of contemporary Palestinian society under occupation, including its treatment of women. In January 2013 Khalifeh was awarded the Mohamed Zafzaf Prize and the judges said that this prize was “an act of recognition of [Khalifeh’s] contributions in the Arab World and beyond and comes to support the Voice of Palestine and humanitarian values” (Qualey).
