Maximin was born in 1947 in the village of Saint-Claude in Guadeloupe, near the La Soufrière volcano. When he was thirteen the family moved to Paris, where he has for the most part remained. His career has combined writing with a number of posts in publishing and in the French Ministries of Culture and Education. In the 1980s he was literary director of the Présence Africaine publishing house and produced the TV programme “Antipodes”; in 1989 he was appointed Director of Cultural Affairs in Guadeloupe, and then in 1998 returned to Paris to take charge of the national celebration of the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery; from 2000 to 2004 he worked at the Ministry of Education, organized the Festival Francophone en France (“francofffonies”[sic]) in 2006, was appointed…
