Edmond Amran El Maleh was born in the city of Safi (Morocco), on March 30, 1917, five years after the establishment of the French Protectorate over Morocco in 1912. The El Maleh family included merchants from Essaouira, a port city that had produced many diplomatic and mercantile envoys for the kingdom. El Maleh chose another direction and joined the Moroccan Communist Party (PCM); he also taught philosophy in Morocco and France, and from his early 60s until his death in 2010 he enjoyed an active and prolific career as a writer. El Maleh’s fiction and essays have received wide recognition in Morocco, but are less well known outside francophone audiences.
