Guillaume de Salluste du Bartas (1544-1590) was born in the village of Montfort (now in the Department of Gers) in 1544, the son of François Salustre, a wealthy merchant and landowner. Du Bartas may have studied at the Collège de Guyenne in Bordeaux. He pursued a degree of law in Toulouse from 1564 to 1567.
