Eugenio Montejo (real name Eugenio Hernández Álvarez) is a Venezuelan poet, essayist, and practitioner of heteronymic writing. He is widely regarded as being, arguably together with Rafael Cadenas, the greatest Venezuelan poet of the second half of the twentieth century.
Montejo was born in Caracas, Venezuela on 19 October 1938. His mother was brought up in Caracas, whilst his father, a baker, came from the provincial town of Güigüe, situated to the south of the Valencia Lake. It was to this town that his great-grandfather had relocated the family, having originally come from Tenerife.
