The life and career of Martin Bucer spanned one of the most significant periods of European history, encompassing changes in which Bucer himself played a crucial part. Reformer, biblical scholar, and theologian, Bucer was at the center of virtually every important step in the progress of the protestant Reformation during his lifetime, beginning with the reform of his long-term home in Strasbourg. While he worked tirelessly to advance his agenda of church reform in the imperial cities of Germany, he nevertheless attempted to act as a mediating influence in controversies among protestant reformers as well as between Protestants and Catholics.
