Johann Valentin Andreae was born into a family of prominent Lutheran churchmen on 17 August 1586. His father was Superintendent at Herrenberg and later Abbot at Königsbronn; his grandfather was Jakob Andreae, “the Luther of Württemberg” who helped develop the Formula of Concord (1577) and served as Chancellor of the University of Tübingen. A sickly child, Johann could not stand unsupported until he was two years old. During his childhood he was tutored by two Silesian medical students who boarded with the Andreae family.
