Johann Valentin Andreae was born into a family of prominent Lutheran churchmen on 17 August 1586. His father was Superintendent at Herrenberg and later Abbot at Königsbronn; his grandfather was Jakob Andreae, “the Luther of Württemberg” who helped develop the Formula of Concord (1577) and served as Chancellor of the University of Tübingen. A sickly child, Johann could not stand unsupported until he was two years old. During his childhood he was tutored by two Silesian medical students who boarded with the Andreae family. In 1601, after the early death of his father, the family moved to Tübingen where he entered the university. While on the journey Johann Valentin injured a leg and was left with a permanent limp.
