Guido Gozzano was born on December 19, 1883, in Turin, Italy, to an upper-middle- class family. His father, Fausto, was an engineer, and his mother, Diodata, was the daughter of Senator Massimo Mautino, a patriot who had supported Giuseppe Mazzini and Massimo D’Azeglio during the process of Italian unification. Though he enrolled in the
FacoltĂ di giurisprudenza(Law School) at the University of Turin, Gozzano never earned a law degree, preferring to devote himself to literary studies and attend lectures by Arturo Graf, a renowned poet and founder of the
Giornale della letteratura italiana.
Gozzano died at the age of 32 from tuberculosis, and left only two completed collections of poems: La via del rifugio (The Road to Shelter, 1907) and I colloqui (The Colloquies, 1911). However, he
