Endre Ady (1877-1919) was born in Érdmindszent, Szilágy County, in Hungary (now Ady Endre, Romania). His family belonged to the Hungarian gentry and had Calvinist roots. After studies at the Calvinist high school in Zilah and the Calvinist college in Debrecen, Ady became a journalist. He took an active part in the politics of the day, yet his importance lies in his poetry rather than his polemical writings.

Ady’s move from conservative Debrecen to Nagyvárad, one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (today Oradea, Romania), opened new vistas for him. The rich cultural scene as well as his relationship with Adél Brül, the Leda of his poems, led to an acquaintance with the cosmopolian life of Paris as well.
