Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski (Matthias Casimirus Sarbievius in Latin; and often Casimir in English publications) was the greatest Polish Neo-Latin poet. As one biographer puts it, “Sarbiewski's fame is as wide as the world of letters” (Quirk 1912). His poetry was being translated into modern European languages, mostly into English, already by his contemporaries in the seventeenth century. Some years ago, Krzysztof Fordoński and Piotr Urbański collected more than 150 “English translations, paraphrases and emulations of [his] poetry”, which they published in a volume entitled

Casimir Britannicus

. A commendatory poem in the 1646 edition of

Odes of Casimire,

translated by George Hils, reads:

The Masters of the Lyrick wit, The two Top of the Muses, sit Upon the Muses two-top'd
