C. Louis Leipoldt was born on 28 December, 1880 to a missionary family in the Cape Colony, and, under private tutelage, became an accomplished reader and writer, able to speak, read or write in eight languages. He held numerous vocations, working firstly as a journalist for war-time publications during the South African War of 1899-1902, then qualifying as a physician abroad, establishing a practice in South Africa in 1914.
