Sevgi Özdamar was born in Malatya, in the eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, on 10 August 1946. As a child, Özdamar moved with her family several times, which resulted in early life experiences that were formed by various surroundings and allowed her to encounter the cultural and economic diversity of several of Turkey’s regions, in particular the capital city of Istanbul, and the northwestern large city of Bursa. An intriguing account of these geographical transitions is found in Özdamar’s 2003 essay “Gastgesichter” (Guest Faces), where she writes: “In my childhood, my parents moved from the Asian to the European side of Istanbul and back again on several occasions because they were in love with Istanbul and wanted to live in every part of the city.
