In November of 2004 the Poetry Society of America and several other sponsors offered “A Tribute to Lucille Clifton”. Held at Hunter College in New York City, the tribute celebrated the lifelong achievements of African American poet Lucille Clifton. Fourteen writers were on stage, among them Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison, National Book Award winner Gerald Stern, and National Book Critics Circle Award winner Sharon Olds. Each of the participants read a poem of Clifton's as well as one of their own recent works. The honored poet, who had been sitting in the audience with two of her daughters during the presentation, rose to the stage to a standing ovation.
