Lucia Lopresti was born in Florence on June 27th, 1895, to a family of Calabrian background. Using the pseudonym ‘Anna Banti', she was a prominent figure on the Italian cultural scene for almost fifty years. Banti was an art historian, author, literary and film critic, translator, and founder and co-editor, with her husband, Roberto Longhi, of the renowned journal

. She was a prolific writer and authored nine novels, one play, seven collections of short stories, numerous critical monographs, articles, and translations. Banti died in Ronchi di Massa on September 2nd, 1985, at the age of ninety. Her papers, together with Longhi's papers and library, are held by the Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell'Arte at their villa in via Benedetto Fortini 30, on the periphery of Florence.
