Egon Erwin Kisch was “der rasende Reporter” (the raging reporter), a journalist whose interest in marginalized parts of society and the world outside Europe endeared him to a large number of readers. He became a figurehead in the fight against fascism. Later generations of journalists regarded his documentaries as exemplary and pioneering. He is admired to this day for the high literary quality of his journalistic work.
Kisch was born on 29 April 1885 in Prague to the Jewish draper Hermann Kisch and his wife Ernestine (née Kuh). He studied at Prague's technical and German universities, and during this time joined the duelling fraternity Saxonia. After one year of voluntary military service and another year studying journalism in Berlin, Kisch worked for the Prague newspaper Bohemia
