Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (“Grant Allen”) is probably best remembered as the author of
The Woman Who Did(1895), a controversial novel which looks at the late-Victorian New Woman question through the theory of “free-love”, or sexual procreation without marriage. While reviews are mixed, one cannot deny the impressive marketing and multi-disciplinary strategy of this text. Allen’s publishing career was short, but prolific. In a mere twenty two years, Allen churned out 77 volumes, 35 of which are novels, ten are collections of short fiction and poetry, and the remaining include non-fiction and essay collections; this number does not include periodical essays, articles, and short stories, which are too numerous to count.
