Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov made a contribution to nineteenth-century Russian literature that was uniquely varied, becoming both one of the leading publishers of his day and one of the foremost writers. He was in close contact with virtually every major figure in the literary world during his lifetime and he was able to persuade most of them to allow him to be the first to publish at least some of their works. At the same time he earned for himself the reputation of the first “poet of the people”
(
narodnyi poet) and became arguably the most widely read and ardently discussed poet of the mid-nineteenth-century period in Russia.
Nekrasov's literary output covered many genres, but it was upon his lyric and narrative poetry that his substantial and enduring reputation was established.
