Josephine Frey Herbst was born March 5, 1892 in Sioux City, Iowa. Her parents were emotionally supportive but economically stressed. Her mother nurtured her imagination with stories taken from her family history, letters, and diaries. However, her father struggled to succeed as the owner of a farm equipment store, which failed in 1912. Herbst would return to these events repeatedly as a writer. Because of her family's inability to finance her education, Herbst's college career was interrupted several times. After attending a number of different institutions, she graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1918.
