During his lifetime, Jorge Ibargüengoitia achieved significant popular success with the reading and theatre-going public. In his plays, novels, short stories and columns he examined his country’s morals and highlighted its idiosyncrasies through a lens of dark humour. Combining complex rhetoric with colloquial language, irony and a deep sensitivity for Mexico’s history and the psychological make-up of his fellow citizens, Ibargüengoitia’s works offer deep insights into the Mexican psyche and culture in a style which is easily recognisable from his trademark use of black humour.
