Guillaume de Salluste du Bartas (1544-1590) was born in the village of Montfort (now in the Department of Gers) in 1544, the son of François Salustre, a wealthy merchant and landowner. The family purchased an estate and a château in the commune of Saint-Georges in 1565, and with that purchase came the title

sieur du Bartas

, which was inherited by Guillaume after the death of his father in 1565. The family name Salustre was changed to the more classical Salluste (or Saluste) around the same time. Du Bartas may have studied at the Collège de Guyenne in Bordeaux. He pursued a degree of law in Toulouse from 1564 to 1567. It was during his time in Toulouse that he began a friendship with the poet Pierre de Brach (1547-1605); their friendship is recorded in De Brach’s poem
