. A homosexual novel that is as much a story about self-development and personal growth as any of his others, it was only published in 1971, after Forster's death. Maurice Hall is born into a respectable middle-class Victorian family. He grows up in suburban London with his widowed mother and two sisters. The book deals with this period of Maurice's life quickly, beginning with a schoolmaster drawing sexual diagrams in the sand for Maurice and then erasing them before anyone else can see. The story soon afterwards moves to Cambridge. Here, Maurice meets his first love, Clive Durham. For three years they have a passionate, intense but platonic friendship before Clive rejects a greater…
