Museum of Innocence, Pamuk tells the love story between a wealthy man and a poor girl, in Istanbul during the turbulent 1970s. During Pamuk’s youth, Turkey was still aspiring to reinforce its thirty-year old democracy, and to join the circle of Western nations, with prospects of achieving economic and industrial wealth. The multi-party system that was envisioned in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk embraced dynamic principles such as upward mobility, educational reform, rapid industrialization and major planning for economic independence.
