Total mortality figures vary between 68,596 (from the contemporary Bills of Mortality) and 200,000. The effect is particularly severe in London, the Court being forced to move to Oxford. Pepys records his experiences in his diary and Defoe will later combine early recollections of the Plague with historical research in his Journal of the Plague Year.
