The name given by American colonists to a series of acts intended to reduce the colonists to compliance with British law. These acts included the Boston Port Act (31 March) which closed the port of Boston pending payment of £18,000 for the East India Company’s tea, thrown into the sea during the Boston Tea Party; the Massachusetts Government Act (20 May) which suspended the colonial charter and placed Massachusetts under the military command of General Thomas Gage; the Administration of Justice Act (20 May) which allowed any British official charged with a capital offence during the emergency to be tried in another jurisdiction; the Coercive Act (Quartering Act; 2 June) which covered the quartering of British troops in American dwellings; and the Quebec Act (22 June) which gave to the…
