An association of German Protestant princes is formed, when the Elector John of Saxony and Philip, Landgrave of Hesse, sign the League of Gotha. This is extended by a further agreement signed at Torgau, creating the League of Torgau. Its aim was to oppose the terms of the Edict of Worms, which outlawed Martin Luther and demanded his punishment as a heretic.
