Arthur Hugh Clough was born in Liverpool on 1 January 1819. He was second of four children of Ann Perfect, a Yorkshire banker's daughter, and James Clough, a cotton merchant originally from North Wales. While his family was still young, James decided it was time to approach his own intermittently failing trade differently and took his family to Charleston, South Carolina in 1822 to become an exporter of raw cotton. After six years in the United States, Arthur was brought back to England and enrolled at Chester
