Amy Clampitt, a descendent of pioneers, was born on June 15, 1920 in the small farming community of New Providence, Iowa (pop. 200). The daughter of Roy Justin and Pauline Felt Clampitt, Clampitt was the first born of five children. Both her father and her paternal grandfather were farmers. Clampitt may have been inspired to read and write by the example of her paternal grandfather who wrote a privately-printed memoir about his life on the prairie. She was raised a Quaker, later becoming a devout Episcopalian with a keen appreciation for religious ritual. Clampitt spent her early childhood years on a 300 acre piece of land that belonged to her paternal grandparents.
