Cristina García is at the forefront of a wave of publication of, and interest in, U.S. Latino/a writers – especially women writers including Julia Alvarez, Sandra Cisneros, and Ana Castillo – that began in the early 1990s. She is one of the best-known Cuban-American writers today, both in the U.S. and in Cuba.

García was born in Havana, Cuba on July 4, 1958, to Francisco M. Garcia and Esperanza Lois García. She is one of three children. Her father was born in Central America, of Spanish and Guatemalan descent, but raised in Cuba; her mother was a Cuban by birth. García came to the United States with her parents when she was 2, as part of what has come to be termed a “first wave” of Cuban exiles that left the island in the immediate wake of the successful revolution of 1959 led
