Thomas Vaughan was the twin brother of Henry Vaughan, the poet. The brothers were born at Newton in Breconshire in 1621, of a Welsh family with connections (some rather distant) amongst the aristocracy of both Wales and England. The brothers were educated locally by Matthew Herbert (another relation), a clergyman and Latinist for whom they always retained great respect, between 1632 and 1638. In 1638 Thomas entered Jesus College, Oxford (probably in company with his brother). Thomas graduated in 1642. According to Henry Vaughan (in a letter to John Aubrey – another relation!), Thomas “continued there [Oxford] for ten or 12 yeares”.
