Max Weber, the German sociologist, historian and philosopher, was born in Erfurt, Germany on 21 April, 1864, the eldest of seven children of Max Weber, Sr. and his wife Helene. Both parents came from prosperous protestant families and had made their own household a lively meeting place for academics and politicians. Here Weber met at an early age many of the great thinkers of his day, historians Heinrich von Treitschke, Heinrich von Sybel, Wilhelm Dilthey and Theodor Mommsen. Weber's father began his career in the city government of Berlin and later became a member of the Prussian House of Deputies and of the German Reichstag, joining the National Liberal Party which had resigned itself to the politics and policies of Chancellor Otto Bismarck.
