On January 22, 1908, James Sinclair Ross was born to Peter and Catherine (Fraser) Ross on a homestead close to Shellbrook, Saskatchewan. When Ross was about seven years old, Peter and Catherine separated. Ross remained with his mother, a housekeeper on a series of farms, while his elder brother and sister lived with their father. Ross attended school in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, leaving after Grade 11 to work in a bank. He worked as a bank teller in the small Saskatchewan towns of Abbey, Lancer, and Arcola, before moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1933 and then to Montreal, Quebec in 1946. He worked continually with the Royal Bank until his retirement in 1968, save for a four-year space (1942-46) in which he was in the army. After retiring, he lived for a period of time in Greece and Spain…
