Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796-1865) was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada. On his father's side he was descended from “New England Planters” who arrived in Nova Scotia in 1761. On his mother's side he was descended from “Loyalists” who arrived in the province in 1784. His grandmother died in 1787 after the ship she was travelling on ran aground near Saint John, New Brunswick, and his own mother died three months after he was born. He was, however, close to his grandfather (d. 1817) who eventually established himself as a Judge of Probate in Windsor after a chequered early career as a merchant and entrepreneur.
