Constance Fenimore Woolson, the sixth child of Charles Jarvis and Hannah Cooper Pomeroy Woolson and a grandniece of James Fenimore Cooper, was born on March 5, 1840 in Claremont, New Hampshire. Tragedy struck her family shortly after her birth when three of her sisters died from scarlet fever. Much in need of a new beginning, the Woolsons moved West, settling in Cleveland, Ohio, where Constance grew up and attended Miss Hayden's School and Cleveland Female Seminary. She subsequently perfected her education at a well-known finishing school in New York City.

Exposed from an early age to a variety of panoramas and cultures - travelling through Ohio, Wisconsin, New England, and staying on Mackinac Island, Michigan, where the family spent the summer - Constance soon developed remarkable powers
