Edmund Waller was born on the 3rd of March 1606, in the Manor-House at Coleshill (in modern Buckinghamshire). He was baptised six days later in Amersham. His family, originally from Kent, was wealthy and landed. The poet's mother, Anne Hampden Waller was related to the families of both John Hampden and Olver Cromwell. His father, Robert Waller, died in August 1616, leaving his son a substantial inheritance. The poet was initially educated at home, and was then sent, in 1616 to Eton College. On 22nd March 1620 he was admitted to King's College, Cambridge as a fellow-commoner. He appears not to have proceeded to a degree and in November 1621 he was sitting in parliament as the representative for Amersham. He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn the following year.
