Life

Marcus Fabius Quintilianus was a native of Calagurris in Spain (present day's Calahorra). He was born under the reign of Tiberius around 30 to 35 AD. During his childhood he lived in Rome for some time, where he received an education from renowned teachers such as the grammarian Quintus Remmius Palaemon and the rhetor Domitius Afer. A few years later he returned to Spain where he must have broadened his knowledge of the art of eloquence in the cultivated circles of Tarraco at the side of famous rhetors active there at the time. He returned to Rome towards 68 on instigation of Galba who, before succeeding Nero, had been governor of Eastern Spain.
