Henry Edward Manning was born in Totteridge, Hertfordshire, on 15 July 1808. His father William was a banker and Member of Parliament. Henry entered Balliol College, Oxford, in 1827. After taking his degree in 1830 he obtained a post in the colonial office, but soon returned to Oxford. He was ordained and took a curacy late in 1832, and when he got his M. A. some months later, he was instituted to the rectories of Woolavington and Graffham. He married in 1833, but his wife died four years later. In 1837 Manning was appointed to the deanery of Midhurst, in 1840 to the archdeaconry at Chichester. In 1842 he became select preacher at Oxford, and consequently published
