Malcolm Lowry is chiefly remembered today for his novel

, a brooding representation of life in Mexico and existential breakdown which captivates all who read it and speaks powerfully of a world in which all the guiding lights have been put out. Whilst his novel is undoubtedly his masterwork, his other writings are equally captivating and worthy of attention.

Clarence Malcolm Lowry was born on 28 July 1909, the youngest of four sons. His father was a prosperous cotton broker and an austere Methodist. The family was given to all kinds of outdoor activities and Malcolm himself became a good golf player and a very good swimmer.
