Denise Levertov was a very accomplished poet whose sixty-year career included being a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Her recognition is clear in the high praise she has received. According to Kenneth Rexroth, who published the 1949 anthology
New British Poets, Levertov “more than anyone, led the redirection of American poetry [. . .] to the mainstream of world literature” (Fuller,
Independent, Obituary). Joan Hallisey praised her as “one of the twentieth-century’s foremost American poets” (
Modern American Poetry). In the
Houston Chronicleand many other sources she is regarded as a major American poet (
