John Keble was born in Fairford, England, on 25 April 1792. His parents were Sarah and John, who was vicar of a neighbouring village, but chose to live in his own house in Fairford. The family consisted of two sons and three daughters. John and his brother Thomas were taught so well by their father that they won scholarships to Corpus Christi College, Oxford. John went there early in 1807. In 1811, he was elected to a fellowship at Oriel. At first, he took private pupils, but then, in 1818, he became tutor at Oriel. When his mother died in 1823, he left Oxford to live with his father and two surviving sisters.
Keble had been ordained priest in 1816, and after 1823 he was in charge of various small parishes. At that time he already held his decidedly High-Church opinions: he considered the
