Caradoc Evans was born into the Welsh-speaking farming culture of Carmarthenshire in West Wales, and was brought up in the village of Rhydlewis in neighbouring Cardiganshire. Though the community was entirely Welsh-speaking, he learnt to speak English at elementary school – where this compulsory medium of instruction was generally seen by the English education establishment as an essential part of the project to bring progress to Wales. A linguistic tension between English as the language of the modern and Welsh as the language of agricultural tradition was at the heart of much of his writing. Leaving school at the standard age of fourteen, Caradoc was apprenticed to his uncle, a draper in the county town of Carmarthen. He moved onto posts as a draper's assistant in Cardiff and then…
