Caradoc Evans was born into the Welsh-speaking farming culture of Carmarthenshire in West Wales, and was brought up in the village of Rhydlewis in neighbouring Cardiganshire. Though the community was entirely Welsh-speaking, he learnt to speak English at elementary school – where this compulsory medium of instruction was generally seen by the English education establishment as an essential part of the project to bring progress to Wales. A linguistic tension between English as the language of the modern and Welsh as the language of agricultural tradition was at the heart of much of his writing.
