Umberto Eco’s works span from medieval aesthetics to twentieth-century Italian pop culture, translation, semiotics, philosophy of language, literary theory, and history of art and thought, to name just a few. He was a philosopher, historian, semiotician, successful novelist, politically engaged intellectual, academic, and writer of children stories. An exceptional polymath, in other words. For clarity’s sake, this entry is artificially structured around three main aspects of Eco’s persona which, however, should not be understood as divided, but rather as always mutually influential and deeply intertwined: the philosopher, the novelist, and the intellectual.
