Elena Garro (1916-1998) is a writer whose work is clouded by her life story, her personal beliefs and sometimes contradictory statements about politics, as well as her fractious relationship with her ex-husband. In the 1960s her earlier work attained considerable attention, but she hit a lull for a period in the late 1960s, only to be recuperated in the 1990s. Over her career she won multiple prestigious awards, was denounced by critics, and acclaimed for her experimental and challenging work.
She wrote ten novels, four collections of short stories, eight works for theatre, and several books of essays. In her youth, she studied choreography in the UNAM and worked as a choreographer from 1934-37, like another contemporary, Nelly Campobello (1900-1986). Garro left this career behind after
