The Eastern German author Kerstin Hensel was born on May 29, 1961 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, which was changed back to its original city name, Chemnitz, after unification in 1990. After completing her studies in nursing at the Karl-Marx-Stadt medical school, she worked from 1980-83 as a surgical nurse. In 1983 she had a son (Benjamin), and began studying creative writing at the Johannes R. Becher Literaturinstitut in Leipzig. After graduation she assumed an internship at the Leipzig Theater. In 1987 she became a freelance writer, a privileged position in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), and began teaching Dramatic Verse and Diction at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst “Ernst Busch” (Ernst Busch College of Dramatic Arts) in East Berlin.
